An average week in the gym. video blog.

Ok so I’ve had a few people email me or in general ask me about my gym program that I work off that has got me to my 135kg record.

There are many different things that I do in the gym however this is the tried and true program that I always go back to that gets the best results for my style in particular.

The key is to work out what your best style is for yourself and to learn with expert guidance ever step of the way. But in saying that this is a brief 10minute video clip to give you an idea of what I do on an average week.

I must apologize for the work I did editing this clip down. I’ve had troubled with my laptop and some software lately so it’s not as clean as I would have liked but I’ll aim to record another week soon and edit it down better.

I will leave it there for now.

All the best.

Dean.

New Years Workout!

Well today is the end of 2011 and so it was my last chance to hit the gym for this year.

As some of you know I’ve been really struggling in the gym. My skin has been a little tricky to handle of late in one tiny little area on my left arm. The consequences of that tiny little 2mm area has been that the skin around my left shoulder has been particularly tight since that little issue arouse. That has meant that I’ve had to change my technique in the gym because of the reduced flexibility and movement that I’ve now got in that shoulder.

That small little issue has made getting back into the heavy weights in the gym a lot harder then ever before. Technique is so crucial to lifting the really heavy weights that I regularly lift. So I’ve been struggling to get my form and technique at the level I need to lift big and have struggled in the gym at weights I normally eat up for breakfast. Weights like 115 or 120kgs that to most is very difficult for me is usually a stroll in the park. Not so much anymore. It’s been a real fight for control and stability as my technique has had to be re adjusted many times since then.

The past few weeks or couple of months actually I’ve not enjoyed my gym workouts as much as normal while I adjust to the increased pain and adjust to the new technique and new style in the gym. Granted most non gym people probably would not see or notice the slight differences but to me they have been huge.

So with today being the last chance for the year to get into the gym I was keen to send the year out on a high note. Before I went into my gym I sat down and thought about my technique. I focused on four things. 1) Technique 2) Control 3) Power. and the 4Th) and final thing was to focus on how fun this is and how easy these weights sessions are for me. Pain is no issue. Never has been an issue for me. I focused on the mental side of enjoying it and knowing that this 115kgs is an absolute piece of cake for me. “It’s easy. Simple. It’s nothing.” I kept telling myself. The mental side of life is something that I focus heavily on these days and so I focused on the mental side of my gym workouts more then I have done for a while of late.

Today’s gym session ended up being an absolute piece of cake. I only went up to 115kgs (253 pounds) but it’s the first time in a number of weeks that I felt like my old self in the gym. I could have gone a lot heavier but I’m working towards another record attempt in the not to distant future so I stuck to my plan that I’ve created to get me to my next record.

It felt fantastic to be back lifting like my old self again and reminded me again of the need to focus on the mental side of everything that we all do in life because that is the difference that turns hard work into easy work.

Merry Christmas

So it is Christmas Eve and I’m relaxing at home looking forward to a fun day tomorrow with family and relatives.
But I wanted to quickly jump online because I wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year! If you are traveling on the road this year please take extra care on the roads and make sure you stay safe with everything you do over this festive season.

I’m really looking forward to sharing some exciting things I’ve been busy working on with everyone in the early new year. But for now I’ll keep you guessing a little longer about all that.

Until my next post stay strong. Be safe and happy.

Salvation Army Presentation

I was recently asked to speak at the Salvation Army Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centre here in Brisbane. It was a special night because 3 people were graduating from the 42week program being clean and sober for 10months now.

It was great to be able to spend a few hours with everyone and share my story with all the people who were there. Some were students who are still struggling to go through the program. Others had already graduated the program in the past or were friends of the Salvation Army that were there to show their support.

The atmosphere throughout the night was really positive. Everyone was very keen to hear my story and take on board some of my life philosophies, and in general learn about the outlook on life that I have.

So as a speaker the vibe in the room was already so positive that my job was basically done before I had spoken. It made things very easy for me!
It was great to meet all the people who were there. I stayed as long as I could to talk individually with everyone who wanted to come over and say hi. I think the 5 stages that I speak about including having a strong attitude, and zero negativity in your life really struck home with everyone. Life really is all about having the right attitude and the more I speak and the more people that I meet continually drives home that simple point that it all begins with a strong attitude.

I decided to do something a little different towards the end of my presentation, something that I haven’t done on stage at a speaking event now for probably 12months. I think I’ll leave that up my sleeve as a secret to use should I feel the need to bring it out at more presentations in the future. Needless to say, it went over very well so I guess if you want to find out what it was that I did you’ll just have to book me for an upcoming event in your area.

Disability Action Week

How many people out there were aware that last week in Queensland was Disability Action Week? I know the great people at SDS were aware of the fact because I spent most of Monday (19th) with all the staff. It was a great day and everyone that came to my presentations were fantastic.

Apart from everyone at SDS coming together to acknowledge and celebrate Disability Action Week and all the possibilities that exist for disabled people these days, I was surprised that the week came and went without media attention or much recognition from those within the Disabled sectors themselves.

Let’s start off by acknowledging that yes we have come a long way from the bad old days when disabled people had basically no rights at all but I wonder if we have become complacent and almost stalled in our fight for equality.

Statistically the odds say that 1 in 5 people in Australia have a disability or major limitation of some kind. However if you ask me we really don’t see that figure crossed over into actual support or funding for the needs of those 1 in 5 people.

Disabled people still have a harder time trying to find mainstream employment. That’s a fact whether you like it or not. We as disable people still face the ignorance and cruelty of a society that is very much focused on the physical appearance or superficial aspects of looking and acting a certain way.

Disabled people still have an incredibly hard time trying to gain access to specialized regular care that they require in order to live independently or to a standard that most able bodied people take for granted.

So, when weeks like Disability Action Week do roll around, it should be a week to celebrate how far we have come but also to take stock of what is still desperately needed. How far do we still have to go before disabled people are given the freedom to just focus on their strengths and getting themselves as healthy as they can be, without having the ongoing stress and concern about how they are going to access the care that is needed to simply survive? Let alone live a life with any degree of quality.

Fun Day.

Today has been a really fun day.
This morning I went down to the Broncos to watch their last training session before they play Manly tomorrow afternoon. I met up with a good mate of mine Daryl from EmbroidMe Chermside who came along to watch training with me.

I must admit I had a bit of a hidden agenda in catching up with Darryl though.

As some of you may know by following my Facebook Fanpage Daryl and I have had an ongoing bet for a number of years now over the Rugby League State of Origin Series, which Daryl lost once again this year. I keep telling him every single year its pointless going against Queensland. We are just way too good. But every time he goes for New South Wales so I guess it’s only fitting that every year he has to embarrass himself.

This year I thought it would be funny to bring my old mate down to the Broncos and I asked Darren Lockyer if he wouldn’t mind jumping in the photo given that Locky’s on field brilliance has won the bet for me so many times now.

Now Daryl has to wear this shirt all day at work as well just so all his regulars can laugh about him losing yet another bet. It’s all in good fun and I’m hoping that my mighty maroons can keep winning for a few more years because I’m so not looking forward to when the inevitable time comes around and I lose this bet and have to wear a shirt that Daryl makes up.

Then this afternoon after the bbq I came home and hit the gym and did a really good session. I’m starting to get back into the heavy weights again lifting 115kgs with ease. So all in all it was a great relaxing day hanging out with friends and hitting the gym.

Image 1: Darren Lockyer from the Brisbane Broncos and I had a good laugh at training this morning as my mate was forced to wear this tshirt after losing our annual State of Origin bet.

Brad’s last game at Suncorp Stadium

This Saturday I’ll be heading into Suncorp Stadium to watch the Wallabies take on the All Blacks in their final match up before the Rugby World Cup.

I am very much looking forward to the game. However it does put me in an unusual situation. Although I am a “True Blue Aussie” and support any Australian team or Australian in general, my loyalties on Saturday will be slightly more towards the NZ All Blacks then the Wallabies.

The reason for my change in allegiance can be summed up in two words:

Brad Thorn.

Brad will be playing his final game in Brisbane on Saturday night and as my loyalty goes to my best mate more than my country on such occasions when the two cross paths.

For those of you who do not know Brad and I first met back in his rookie year at the Broncos some 16 or 17 years ago.  We became mates more by chance than anything else. My seat in the dressing room before and after games and at a lot of Broncos events just happen to by beside Brad’s.  So it was more a case of coincidence that after the games when we would all sit in the dressing rooms and wait for Wayne Bennett who would come in to give his thoughts on the game and say his piece. I sat beside Brad either in my electric scooter or on the spare seat. Brad would often ask my thoughts on the game and from those little conversations the two of us quickly became good mates.

Brad has had a huge influence on my life. Initially as a sporting hero and someone I looked up to on the footy field through to someone that I’m lucky to call a close personal friend of mine.  Even though the guy clearly can’t read a map as he once got lost in Kilcoy on his way to my hometown of Kingaroy for my 18th birthday!

I remember attending the 1998 Grand Final at the Sydney Football Stadium. Brad was playing for the Broncos and we won the Grand Final. It was a fantastic game. Afterwards I was lucky enough to be invited down onto the field to walk the Lap of Honour with all the guys. If my memory serves me correctly that was the first time that just about anyone at the club saw me walk. Up until that time I relied on getting around in my electric scooter or the wheelchair when I couldn’t take the scooter with me. As I slowly walked out onto the stadium turf a lot of the guys came over to make sure I joined in on the celebrations and the team and I made our way around the stadium on the lap of honour Brad and one of the trainers hung back with me as I was very unstable on my feet. Brad made sure all of the people on the field stayed away so as not to knock me over and all the cameramen did not get in my way as we slowly walked the lap of honour and took the moment in. I think Brad was just shocked that I was walking as I don’t think he had ever seen me actually walking before.

Brad was also the one who got me into weightlifting. It was Brad who uncovered my natural ability to lift heavy weights. For as long as I can remember I had always avoided lifting anything heavy and had only ever sat back and watched everyone in the Broncos gym go about their training programs. But Brad offered to give me a hand in the gym one day to see if my skin could handle some light weights. What I’ve achieved since that first session lifting small lightweights has all come from Brad’s guidance and expert advice. There is no way I’d be lifting the kind of weights or doing the kind of things that I do in the gym if it wasn’t for my mate taking the time to map out a gym program and guide me in the world of weightlifting.

On the footy field I think Brad will be remembered as one of the toughest true professional athletes in the modern game. He doesn’t score many ties nor does he stand out as superstar but every great team needs at least one player like Brad who can roll up his sleeves and do all the little things that often gets forgotten about or over looked by fans and supporters. As a mate I’ve learnt a lot from watching the way he trains and prepares for everything he does on and off the field.

We both live by the simply motto to never admit defeat and both Brad and I share that fighting spirit to work towards achieving and realizing all the goals that we have both set for ourselves.

In this modern age of sport where contracts and celebrity status often become more important  than the game itself, it has been refreshing to see Brad often turn down the easy options and at times the big money to chase the dream and achieve all that he has been able to achieve in both Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Fingers crossed he finishes his career off with the All Blacks by winning the World Cup and then I’ll be able to go back to cheering for Australia. Although it will be weird not to see him run out onto the field for the big games  I am looking forward to having my gym mate back in Brisbane when he eventually does retire (I have to wait a few more years though as he is heading to Japan next to play a few years of Rugby over there) and it will be good fun when he finally does return home to Brisbane to be able to sit back and watch the next generation try to fill his shoes.

(Image 1 was taken in the dressing room after one of the Broncos game at ANZ Stadium. Yep Brad always had to have his shirt off in just about every photo!)

(Image 2 was taken immediately after I finished the lap of honour with Brad and entered the dressing room to start celebrating. I spotted the trophy sitting in the middle of the room and sat down beside it to get a photo then all of a sudden Brad and all the guys jumped in to be in the photo! Awesome memories!!! Again Brad’s without his shirt, What is up with that?)

AD Marketing

I have had the privilege of knowing Dean for a large part of my life.  I have seen him develop from a young age into the professional and inspirational man he is today.  Dean and I both grew up in Kingaroy and have stayed in contact throughout our adult lives on both social and professional levels.

While many people see him for his disability I am honoured to be able to share a relationship that is much deeper where I see firsthand his ‘Never Admit Defeat’ attitude.  I know Dean as the little bloke with the guns that whips everybody at table tennis.

It’s this personality combined with his achievements that makes Dean Clifford a brilliant speaker.  Dean’s story is an inspirational one however it’s his tireless efforts in striving for more each and every day that impresses you.

Dean’s true character is in his ability to achieve and make the difficult appear effortless through his will and determination.  Many people speak of great sports people or brilliant actors as ‘making the difficult appear effortless’ well Dean Clifford does it as a part of his daily routine.

His story is moving and far from over, I am grateful to have him as a friend and I look forward to many more floggings from him on the table tennis court.

I have no hesitations in recommending Dean for any speaking engagement – he has a brilliant story to tell and certainly captures the attention of a room!

Progress Recruitment

To whom it may concern:

In June 2007 I travelled from the UK to present at the ACE Annual Disability Employment Network Conference in Melbourne, Victoria.

The conference was a great success and not least because I met Dean Clifford, a keynote speaker at the event. I knew then that I must get Dean over to the UK. His style, contact and overwhelming sincerity positioned him way ahead of any other speaker I had ever met.

In November 2008 Dean came over to the UK to speak at a range of events I had arranged. In two weeks he held the attention of, and won the hearts of 500 teenagers, inspired 30 students with the most significant disabilities to believe in themselves, got the first ever standing ovation from the Business Leaders Group and so inspired my staff team that they consistently speak of the honour of meeting a man of such determination, humility and strength.

I can whole-heartedly recommend Dean to you for any event where you need to engage people. His story has a hook for everyone and anyone. Aside from his excellent presentation skills Dean is a joy to work with. Despite challenges with dates, visas, permits and accommodation his relaxed can do attitude reassured me that all would be well and it was.

We are always looking for opportunities to invite Dean back to the UK. If you want to give people an insight into what is possible, take people from their comfort zone in a way that doesn’t hurt and ensure people never forget then commission Dean Clifford.

Yours faithfully

Toyota

In 2005 I meet a few of the Executives of Toyota Australia while working at Ken Mills Toyota.
Ken and Sheryl invited me to stay and have lunch with all of our dealership managers and the Toyota Executives who were visiting our dealership to give the Kingaroy dealership the prestigious Toyota Presidents Award for excellence.

It was there that both Ken and Sheryl Mills suggested to a few of the Toyota Executives that it would be very worthwhile for Toyota  and very beneficial to my beckoning speaking career if Toyota invited me to speak at one of their upcoming events. Obviously I was very eager but did not think anything more of it.

A few weeks later I received an invitation to fly down to Sydney and speak at the Toyota Australia head offices for a lunch meeting with some of Toyota’s top executives.  The presentation went extremely well and I was invited to stay for lunch afterwards where we discussed a number topics. Towards the end of our meeting the subject was raised if there was any way Toyota could assist me further. The idea of sponsoring me and my speaking in some way was raised and at the end of the meeting several different ideas had been spoken about.

I returned home excited about my time in Sydney but I was not expecting anything further to come from that trip. 1 month had passed and I received an email informing me that the Toyota executives had decided to become my official sponsors.

Toyota continues to be my biggest long term supporter and sponsor. I am thrilled that I have the backing and support from an internationally recognised leader like Toyota. I look forward to our partnership continuing for many more years into the future.

AD Marketing

I’ve known Ashley Dionysius from AD Marketing ever since our days at Kingaroy State High School. Ash and I remained good mates after school finished catching up whenever we could, usually at footy games and social events. After a brief discussion on the phone I decided I needed my old mate to help me redesign my website and my online content.

I’m thrilled to be working with my old mate and I would highly recommend his services to everybody who runs and managers their own small business.

Ken Mills Toyota

Ken and Sheryl Mills along with all the staff at Ken Mills Toyota have been a very important part of both my personal and professional life for a long long time now.

It was Ken and Sheryl who gave me a chance again in the workforce. Inviting me into the Ken Mills Toyota team after I had been turned down for numerous jobs. I had all but given up on ever finding employment when Ken and Sheryl offered me a position within their team.

Ken was the person who also arranged my very first presentation back in 2003.

Before I even believed I was ready to enter the speaking world Ken and Sheryl believed in me and my story and encouraged me to start the ball rolling on this incredible journey.

On top of all that it was Ken and Sheryl who introduced me to the Toyota executive and recommended that they hear my story. From that meeting and recommendation Toyota came on board as my personal sponsor.

Ken and Sheryl have been a fantastic support and guide for me in everything that I have done over the years and have also become someone who I am privileged to know and be friends with.

Testimonial from Shane Webcke

Dean is not a sporting hero or the Demtel man, he does have an amazing story of life’s struggle from a perspective that not many could imagine or handle.  He is courage personified and I only hope you may have the opportunity to find this out. Many believe Dean is a National Treasure.

Life is a strange and very precious thing, the truth is often stranger than fiction –

**** Dean has Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) or more commonly referred term a, Cotton Wool Kids.  The term kids is used due to the fact that those with this genetic disease do not live past childhood.  This is a tragic and debilitating disease with no cure, usually containing an early death sentence. Dean has baffles medical science with his survival and his struggle for life. There are many from all walks of life that can learn a great deal from this young man.

Dean is now 26; he was not expected to live past the age of 5.  Dean’s day is one filled with incredible pain and hardship, none of which he allows to impede the pursuit of his dream. Motivational speaking, sharing his life story, thereby inspiring others to dream and to believe in themselves.

Dean is an ordinary bloke with an extraordinary gift, you will never look at life in the same way again. Dean’s journey as a Motivational speaker started simply and honestly, he is committed to helping others through his own personnel experience.  This was not intentional —-it is a gift he has and if you allow yourself the opportunity perhaps the emotional roller coaster –that is Dean’s life will inspire you as much as it has inspired thousands already!  You owe it to yourself and your company, in fact you deserve Dean! I hold this philosophy very strongly, I believe I am a better person and you will be as well by taking this chance to witness what Dean has to offer.

By the way Dean is also the Face of ACE”, ACE is Australia’s Disability Employment Service Peak Body; promoting awareness within Australian business communities  ‘Possibilities for People with Disabilities’, Dean is their National Ambassador.   Dean is also the Good Will Ambassador for the Brisbane Broncos and a spokesperson with DEBRA (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research of Australia) he has his own company DMC Motivational and in his sphere he is the Business and Marketing Officer with Ken Mills Toyota.  Not bad for a guy that calls himself (and his presentations) Dead Man Working!

Dean is a truly amazing and remarkable man.

To walk a mile in Dean’s shoes and maintain the composure and zest for life Dean has is beyond most mere mortals. Yet he shares openly and willingly urging others to dream and to believe in themselves!

Dean’s story is powerful, moving and empowering, an audience is taken on the emotional roller coaster –that is Dean’s life!  Dean sharing his story is life changing and makes one look seriously at life and what we all take for granted. I know Dean has something unique and special to offer groups, corporations and business, simply by telling his story!

Dean’s Presentation is titled “Dead Man Working”. He modifies the presentation to cater to all speaking requirements, from Keynote presentations to whatever the company or conference may require. The feedback from schools, universities, small, medium and large businesses as well as Cooperate functions and Government functions suggest Dean is going to be in high demand.

Testimonial from Brad Thorn

To whom it may concern,

March this year (2005) I was very fortunate to attend a business conference in which Dean Clifford presented his story “Dead Man Working”. It was an extremely thought provoking and moving presentation of Deans life living with EB and the daily challenges he has faced to get to where he is today. It is a presentation worthy to be heard in any environment from school children, staff motivation workshops, conferences, to the corporate elite. Dean is a very professional and natural speaker, mixing the serious issues that he faces with EB with his good humour making for a very personal and entertaining experience.

Dean and I have shared a friendship for 10 years. In this time I have watched him develop from a very unwell teenager to the man he is today. Although Dean has faced many physical and emotional challenges throughout his life, he has never let it stop him from living life to the full. He has always been extremely optimistic and positive, and determined to live life, like any other young man.  As a person who has played professional sport, Deans message of perseverance, determination and humility, has had a powerful effect on me. It reminds me to keep a clear focus on my goals, and appreciate others who have a tougher road them myself, yet still achieve. To try and live every day to the full, appreciating my health and not taking it for granted.

Seeing the way Dean has impacted many people around him, it is a tribute to his character and to that of his family. It has been my honour and privilege to know Dean personally; I hope that others have the same opportunity.

Yours Sincerely

To Whom It May Concern:

Dean Clifford and I first met at a football match in Brisbane. We briefly spoke that night but not at any great length. During my drive home that night, many questions went through my head, none more so than Dean’s outlook on life and what drives him.

I subsequently phoned Dean and had a conversation with Dean where he informed me about his motivational speaking. Taking these thoughts away I decided to invite Dean to speak at one of our monthly off site management meetings.

On the 8th Aug 2007, Dean ventured to our off site meeting. On the agenda I had listed a mystery guest speaker, preferring to create a sense of curiosity around the day. We started our morning with some department updates prior to Dean’s arrival. At around 11am Dean arrived which worked in well with our days plan.

On entry, Dean was introduced to the management team who were all a little taken back by his arrival, as I think most were expecting a sports star or the like. Without any hint of being shy or holding back Dean took over from there. Setting up his presentation that screened in the background while he spoke, he maintained such a keen intent audience. At the end, Dean answered many questions and joined us for lunch where questions continued throughout the break. At the end of lunch, Dean left us and we thanked him greatly for his time.

During the afternoon session out initial discussion was about our time with Dean. The management team were amazed at his outlook, positive nature and saw how much can be learnt from his life’s view. It was agreed at that time a letter of recommendation would be written and sent to Dean. The management team agreed that Dean’s approach was different, not the usual motivational speaker you may have. He is not someone who has made millions of dollars or carried out some amazing sporting achievement. Dean’s achievement is being able to smile at all life has delivered to him, something we can all learn from. There is always a way to move forward.

To Dean personally,

We thank you with great appreciation and wish you all the best in your chosen path in life. Also, we acknowledge you live your life how you want on your terms and not those dictated to you by others, for this is where your strength is and your commitment of life enjoyment.

Keep your smile and all the best for the future.

With Kind Regards.

NRL

To whom it may concern

It was the NRL’s privilege to have Dean Clifford as one of the speakers during the Toyota Cup induction camps. These camps are designed by the NRL to help young players become not only better players, but better men. We are approached by numerous speakers every year, the majority of which we turn down as we are very selective in this process. However when Dean made himself available, we jumped at the opportunity to have him speak. The talk given by our guest speaker is often the highlight of the camp, well it was in the case of Dean Clifford. I can honestly say we have never had anyone speak with more vulnerability, courage and passion.

His ability to draw from his experience’s and speak from the heart, gave our young men a greater perspective on life, and how a new motivation to live their life with greater purpose. After Dean’s talk, he sat down to chat with the players along with former Origin great Gordon Tallis who also spoke at the camp to impart his knowledge. The team of young men that stayed behind were glued to both Gordon and Dean as they stayed for hours and gave above and beyond the time required.

It would be my honour to recommend Dean Clifford, he would be of invaluable service to any school or organisation.

Testimonial from Petero Civoniceva

19 August 2003

To whom it may concern

I have known Dean (Deano) for over seven years now and we have been close friends for at least five of those years. During that time I have got to know him very well and have watched him overcome many obstacles to develop into the person he is today.

When I first meet Deano he was restricted to his motorized scooter (wheelchair) because of the pain he endured and over time the lack of muscular strength in his legs made him too weak to walk. Over the past seven years most of my team mates at the Brisbane Broncos and I have watched Deano overcome the odds and obstacles that had been put in front of him to become a very respected and valued member of our society. He is also a great friend and loyal supporter of the  Broncos in general.

I have been fortunate to witness Deano’s amazing progression from him relying almost totally on the use of his wheelchair, to him now walking again. This transgression led to one of his life’s more memorable moments in the  year 2000 when he was handed the Olympic torch and walked the 600m leg of the Olympic Torch Relay just outside of his hometown of Kingaroy. Deano has continued to live his life to its fullest and has never let an opportunity pass him by and it is this positive outlook on life that is obvious to everyone who spends time with him. Deano is someone who does not ask for sympathy, only respect and to be treated the same as everyone else.

This past year or so, close family and friends have noticed a dramatic change in Deano’s persona. He is now very confident, in control of every situation and very much a role model to those around him. This, in my mind, has been due  to the fact of  his job at Ken Mills Toyota. Deano has become very involved and an important member of the dealership and is a person who truly loves his work. The confidence he has gained at Ken MIlls Toyota has led to Deano aspiring to become a motivational speaker and releasing a book on his life story. He has benefited greatly from the opportunity and appreciates being a part of such a flexible team, which allows him to work from home when he is not at his best. Ken and Sheryl Mills have been very supportive and have become aware of the qualities that all of his close friends already know Deano possesses.

I do not see Deano as having a disability. It is those who judge him from the outside who do not understand what a truly remarkable and inspiring person he is. He is a very mature and ambitious young man, and is someone who I am very fortunate to call a friend to know and trust.

EmbriodMe Chermside

Darryl who owns and runs EmbriodMe in Chermside (Brisbane northern suburb) is a good mate of mine who has very generously helped me out with all my business clothes. He has also created my record weightlifting singlets to signify every major milestone I’ve achieved in the gym. Something that I am incredibly grateful for.

The only real downside is that Darryl is a New South Wales supporter in the State of Origin. Hahaha! The two of us have a lot of fun joking and arguing about who is going to win each year during the State of Origin series. We have an ongoing bet between us both each year where the loser has to wear a shirt with whatever the winner wants written across it.
Luckily for me Queensland has not let me down yet and it has been Darryl who has had to wear a shirt of my choice.

Testimonial from Elizabeth (friend)

I am privileged to have known Dean since our younger years as family friends, but have become closer with Dean over the last couple of years.

TG1!  Well, that accurately sums Dean up in a nutshell. He is The Great One!

I had the honour of accompanying Dean to a dinner function for the Police Service last year.  Dean had spoken during the previous week for the Officers who had come from various parts of the world to participate in a development course. I observed that people were ‘taken’ by Dean, still wanting to speak to him to find out more about his incredible journey even after the majority of these people had heard his speech during the week.  I can say without a doubt that all of those present at the dinner and for Dean’s speech took something very special away with them to share with others about Deans life and his inspiring message he relentlessly sets about getting across.

Dean’s life is undoubtedly like no other.  It is tough, unique, painful, physically and mentally challenging and unpredictable.  When most people rise an hour or two before they leave for work Dean is up 4 to 5 hours before he has to leave.  This is just one of t he many ways Dean has to lead his life in order to survive each day whether he wants it to be like that or not.  So maybe this is the reason why, that in every other aspect of his life be that work, personal – with family or friends or anything for his own satisfaction, he excels to the highest level and confidently goes about to achieve the very best outcome in every situation.

In saying that, Dean’s disease, Epidermolysis Bullosa has enabled him to become the strong willed, caring intelligent and humorous friend that he is today.  Dean has had to condition his mind to bare the unthinkable level of pain and then rise above it, pretend it’s not here and we are not talking the pain of slamming a finger in a door here. It is worse!  How one person can endure so much pain yet sustain such a positive attitude and live life to the fullest is a miracle in itself. He displays great willpower which everyone should aspire.

When I look at Dean or listen to or talk to Dean I am always learning. He has taught me so much.  Not only learning about Dean but learning also how to better myself by using different concepts of positive thinking which Dean has endeavoured to show me.

Dean has the ability to show people a light if they feel theirs is fading.

He has the power to inspire people, reach out and touch their hearts like no one else.

If there’s one thing I have learnt from Dean it is that the human spirit is what truly matters, not material possessions, looks, or latest fashions or money.  If you have love and a good heart that’s all you need to survive and that’s what will take you places.  As Dean has made perfectly clear, the essence of our lives is what we allow our spirit to do or not do.

Dean is an asset to human existence and although it sounds cliché, if there were more people like Dean the world would be a more pleasant place.  Due to his sheer determination, Dean never gives up and he never will!!!!  He has a sense of humour that will keep you smiling for hours.  I see Dean as AMAZING!

That is the word I use a lot to Dean because he really does amaze me so often, in so many ways.

Brisbane Girls Grammar

Testimonial – Mr Dean Clifford

In 2008, Brisbane Girls Grammar School invited motivational speaker Dean Clifford to speak to all the girls in Year 10, 11 and 12.

Dean’s presentation was truly inspirational on many different level. During his talk he described for the girls his very rare and severe lifelong medical condition, Epidermolysis Bullosa, and through this shared with them the challenges that he has faced since his very early years – the endless operations as a young child through to the daily ritual of managing his life successfully. He explained how, as a baby he was given only four year to live, and now at the age of 29, has overcome an enormous number of obstacles including discrimination and exclusion. He focussed strongly on the setting and achievement of goals, and how he has overcome his physical challenges to achieve some outstanding milestones in his life. At the conclusion of each of his talks, the reception given to Dean was heart-warming and extremely affirming, with the audience spontaneously and unanimously joining in a standing ovation and sustained applause.

Perhaps the real impact, however, came after the event. Since Dean’s three presentations, many girls have expressed a real appreciation for what he had to say, often using parts of his story to relate to the challenges they themselves face in their own lives, and many expressing heartfelt appreciation that they now have a more global perspective on life, and a better understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by those less fortunate than themselves. A number have made the comment that hearing Dean speak has been the most impactful experience they have had.

Dean Clifford comes to you with my unqualified recommendation. I am certain that your older students can derive a very significant benefit from hearing him speak. If I can be of any assistance to you, or can provide further details with regard to Dean’s work, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Your sincerely

Dan Baker

I first met Dan way back in the mid 90’s when Dan first joined the Brisbane Broncos as the Strength and Conditioning Trainer. Since then Dan and I have become good mates.

Dan has shared his vast knowledge, expertise and technical tips in weightlifting with me over the years. Which has been invaluable as I progressed through the different weight levels. He has also given me some resistance bands that he sells on his website which has enabled me to continue training during all my speaking travels.

I doubt I would be lifting as much as I am currently lifting in the gym if it was not for Dan’s assistance and input.

Dear Dean

Thank you for the opportunity to travel with you recently and to hear your talk in Kingaroy.

I was very impressed with your presentation and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about your background and your approach to making the most of every day.

Dear Dean,

During the 2nd semester of 2005, the Management Development Program of the Queensland Police Service ran two courses in strategic leadership and management for senior sergeant’s seeking promotion to Inspector. These courses proved to be a great success and the MDP is very grateful to you for giving up your valuable time to share your expertise and assist in the development of these officers.

Feedback included comments such as ‘Very informative – an amazing story’, ‘Inspirational!’ ‘There are no other words’ and ‘What do you say?’ Well done Dean. The whole QPS should hear you.

Ken Mills Toyota

To Whom It May Concern:

On Wednesday the 21st of July, Dean Clifford delivered the story of his life to all of the employees of our Toyota dealerships at Nambour and Maroochydore.

Dean is a casual employee of our business and is known to most of the staff. It is safe to say that our employees gained a new appreciation of the person that they see in our dealership on a weekly basis. Dean’s story is truly inspirational, and our staff were amazed to understand the discipline and mental strength that Dean possesses in order to manage his illness so that he can live a  normal life.

Dean’s attitude to life is outstanding and I would recommend his motivational speech “Dead Man Working” to any employer or group leader.

Yours Faithfully

12th March 2005

Dear Dean

Sometimes it is not what you have done, but how you do it. Today at Brisbane Business Swap, you touched many people in a way they may never have experienced before, and we may never know how profound your influence redefined their thinking or priorities?
Whatever the outcome, they will never forget today’s meeting, and they will never forget you.

You shared the room with the spirit and legend of Australian sport ‘The Don’, and Dean, I’m positive he would have been delighted to share the podium with you anytime. He most probably would have given you a good game of table tennis!

Dean, we wish you well in your journey on the corporate speaking circuit, and would like to invite you back to speak or just to visit us whenever you can. Trust these special moments (pics) can make your scrap book of good times.

Best Wishes and regards

Highfurlong School Blackpool

Dean Clifford Testimonial

Dean is a person who lives a dream life that he aspired to. He believes, talks, thinks and constantly plans to turn his dreams into reality constantly. Through courage, hard graft, tact and intelligence Dean has created many opportunities to achieve his dreams.

There are no barriers to this man’s determination. His great will – power has overcome great odds and he has achieved quickly what others take an eternity to do.

It was a fantastic experience for my pupils, staff and I to work with Dean when he visited Blackpool.

In front of five hundred students teaching inspirational life skills to your entrepreneurs, presenting in adult workshops or in leading young disabled athletes; motivational sessions, Dean was a master presenter whose powerful message left a powerful message of hope and helped us all gain fresh insights into our understanding.

He is a great teacher. You will learn a lot from Dean’s story.

Brisbane Broncos

In 2005 I was officially inducted as the Brisbane Broncos Ambassador. However my links to the Broncos go way back to 1989.

It is an honour to be the club’s only Ambassador and a privilege to be closely linked with the Brisbane Broncos for so long now.

Although my involvement with the Broncos has drastically changed over the years as both players and club management have changed the Broncos still hold soft spot for me. I am very happy that the door is always open down at the club for me.
